Earlier this week I got the amazing opportunity to participate in a Q&A conference call session with Sam Huntington, of SyFy’s Being Human. Sam is also making a special appearance in SyFy’s Face Off, this coming Tuesday, where he’ll judge the contestants in their Foundation Challenge. Anyways, many awesome questions were asked during the Q&A session with Sam Huntington, below are some which I thought were great:

In regards to you being on Face Off, can you describe a little bit more of what role you take and maybe what advice you gave to the contestants?

I judge a Foundation Challenge which is the first challenge of the episode. It basically grants immunity to one of the contestants and puts unfortunately a couple in the bottom.

{Did you} have to sit and watch people get makeup for six/eight hours?

No. In fact, one of the most impressive things about it was, the contestants were able to perform these amazing makeup in like an hour and a half.

Can you talk a little bit about the new werewolves we are going to see this season and how they are different from Josh?

They represent a real threat to Josh and not so much physically, but more socially. And who {the werewolves} are, is also a threat to the people that Josh loves.

Is there anything you can tell us about your previous love interest then or is that kind of under wraps too?

Well, I can say that it happens very soon. You find out a very revealing tidbit about Josh’s former flame and actually it’s in this coming episode.

{In an interview with SFX Magazine an UK magazine}, one of the things they have you saying is that the transformation effects have become more streamlined and more CG. Can you talk about that a bit?

Yes, last year they came to the realization that they couldn’t afford to lose me for six hours on end during the work day and lucky for me because it damn near killed me every time they did it. So I think, because of that and because technology is so fantastic, they decided to supplement the FX makeup more this season with CG. The good news all around – it means less time in the makeup chair for me; and it really looks bad ass.

{Another} thing I think they realized is when they do put me in makeup they don’t always need to show my whole body. For instance, a lot of times, they’ll just show my chest bursting or they’ll show the claws and the fangs descend or they’ll see my face darkening. So they don’t have to go full with it every time which once again has been a real saving grace for me this year.

What kind of effects do you most like to see as a fan versus what kind of effects are the most fun and the most difficult to work with as an actor?

Those two things go hand in hand. The things that I like to see are often times the more difficult things to achieve; look at a movie like Pan’s Labyrinth where there’s so much practical makeup and it’s so effective. I’m a traditionalist; I go back to movies like Star Wars and ET {which is} a great example because then they tried to make it better by adding CG, 20 years later and it just screams at you, whereas when you see the puppet, you believe it’s ET. You believe it’s a real thing, a thing with a heart and soul.

I am definitely more a fan of practical makeup and puppetry than I am of CG, but I think when you are on a budget and you are flying through a TV show, it only makes sense to use CG and to hire the best people for the job.

Two episodes into the new season and so far we have had a bunch of new characters come on board. How has that affected the dynamic of the big three and just the dynamics of the setting in general?

There are a lot of new characters this {season} which I think broadens and makes the show more rich. But at the same time it means that the three of us, Sam, Meaghan and I, didn’t get to spend as much time with each other this year. This didn’t change the dynamic between the three of us at all. In fact, what it did was, when we did get to work together which was often — less, we were like school girls. It was ridiculous and it made the silliness and stupidity on set just – it brought it to levels that were just inappropriate.

Do you miss working together as often?

Oh yes, I miss them desperately. Not only do I miss them personally and we have such crazy and amazing bond, but we know that when we are working together, when we walk on set, we know what we are doing is going to be great. It is comfortable, natural, and organic and it comes out. We are able to help each other, and guide each other through.

What did you learn about yourself as an actor and as a fan of reality TV?

I don’t know if I learned too much about myself as an actor, I did learn that I enjoy the world of reality television so much. I really, really, really enjoyed my time on Face Off. Not only was everyone super sweet, really professional, smart and the show is awesome, but it was cool to see these people, who are not putting out errors, {but} who are doing the work that they are passionate about.

If you could create the ultimate horror creature using some of the aspects of Face Off, what would it look like?

How about a demon principal, like a high school principal. Big long yard stick, that’s the weapon with a sharpened – maybe with just a nail at the end of it. And after they’re done maiming you, they draw a chalk outline around you.

What do you feel it is about Being Human that resonates well with you?

It’s right there in the title. These three people are really trying to overcome, accept and fight against their temptations and who they are. There’s so much humanity in what they’re doing that I think it’s really engaging for people. This show it’s a character drama; it’s not at a core a supernatural show. It’s the real human aspect that people tune in for.

Seeing how Face Off is a reality show, was there a noticeable amount of tension among the contestants as they were doing a test?

They pretty much kept to themselves and I was only there for like three plus hours. So I didn’t really get the full drama of the behind the scenes between the contestants. I can say that when I had to put two of the contestants in the bottom two, it was very uncomfortable. You could slice the tension with a knife, it was awful.

Was it obvious that {some} were doing better than others, right away?

They were all fantastic. All the makeups were so great that nothing was glaring. It took getting right up to them and looking them over and inspecting each aspect of the makeup to make a decision. After that, in my mind there was a clear winner and unfortunately a clear loser.
I walked off the set and called my wife immediately and I was like, “That was both one of the coolest things I have ever done and one of the most difficult things I’ve ever had to do — telling somebody that their work wasn’t up to snuff.” So it was tough.

Are there any moments this season that you can speak of that were really challenging for you as an actor either physically or emotionally?

One of the things that are so great about making the show, about being on set is {that} I’m challenged every day. I really do my best to bring the kind of beautiful writing that we’re given to life in a natural way. It’s my job to make it as natural as possible so that people will feel like these {characters} are human beings, {so} the viewers will feel like {the characters are} fighting a human fight. I’ve had many moments this year where I walked to set and I was scared that I wasn’t going to be able to do what I wanted to do with the scene and what the scene deserved. Luckily, most of the time I was able to achieve what I set out to do, but I’m always questioning myself and trying to better myself as an actor. It’s very challenging.

Out of the cast, you probably have the most elaborate makeup. Was it nice to finally get some company when Kristen now has to go through what you go through?

Yes.

Did you give her any advice?

Yes, it was lovely. There are new werewolves on the show too; so I had a lot of commiseration and camaraderie this year in my makeup pain and woes. Especially Kristen, although, she handled it really well. She was a total trooper. My words of wisdom and advice were “get ready because this really sucks.” But luckily, because of what I went through last year which was hellish and other aspects like the increase of the CG, I don’t think she had to endure too much crazy stuff. So yes, it was really, really nice to have other werewolves.

If you had to choose in real life, would you rather be a ghost, a werewolf or a vampire?

Werewolf. Hands down. A vampire, you are dead and you have a “blood lust.” {Drinking} blood, it’s like an addiction, so you have this monkey on your back always. Ghosts, you’re non-corporeal. You can’t eat, you can’t have sex, and you can’t do anything that’s fun. You can float around, you can spy on people. But I guess if that floats your boat, you’re great. But werewolf, you’re basically a dude until you turn into a bad ass. And that’s the most obvious answer ever. Once a month, one a month. And then in another month, you can turn into whatever you want.

What’s something about you that your fans would be surprised to know?

I think a lot of them already know that I am a father. I have a 2-1/2 year old son; my wife is pregnant with our second child, due in a little less than a month. I was also gymnast when I was young. For years and years, I was a gymnast.

What part of you do you see in Josh?

Oh so much. His nervousness, his eagerness to please, his guilt, a lot of his humor. A lot of the humor that you see on the show is just me being me. I look like just like him.

If you could, and it was your choice, what would you like to see in the future happen to your character?

A lot of what I want to happen happens this season. Ultimately for Josh, somewhere down the line I would like him to find his inner peace and I’d {like for} him to be able to have the normalcy that he so desperately wants. I’d {also} love him to have a family.

In Time

In the future, time has become the ultimate currency and genetic alteration has allowed people to stop aging at 25 years old. Upon reaching 25, the countdown begins and in order to stay alive everyone must work to buy themselves more time or die within a year. The rich can buy their way out of the situation, while the rest are left to negotiate for immortality. When a struggling young man, Will Salas (Timberlake), comes in contact with a “millionaire,” he is gifted more time than he can imagine. Falsely accused of murder, Will is a fugitive on the run and becomes determined to bring down the entire system by any means possible. (Fox Home Entertainment)

Drive

Amazing performance by Ryan Gosling, Drive is a must-see-Oscar-worthy movie.

Ryan Gosling stars as a Hollywood stunt driver for movies by day and moonlights as a wheelman for criminals by night. Though a loner by nature, “Driver” can’t help falling in love with his beautiful neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband. After a heist goes wrong, Driver finds himself driving defense for the girl he loves, tailgated by a syndicate of deadly serious criminals (Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman). Soon he realizes the gangsters are after more than the bag of cash and is forced to shift gears and go on the offense. (Amazon)

The Thing (2011)

It’s not human. Yet. From the producers of Dawn of the Dead comes the chilling prelude to John Carpenter’s cult classic film. When paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) travels to an isolated outpost in Antarctica for the expedition of a lifetime, she joins an international team that unearths a remarkable discovery. Their elation quickly turns to fear as they realize that their experiment has freed a mysterious being from its frozen prison… (Amazon)

Dream House

Will Atenton (Daniel Craig) quit a high-profile job in Manhattan to relocate his wife, Libby (Oscar®-winner Rachel Weisz), and their two daughters to a quaint New England town. But as they settle into their new life, they discover their perfect home was once the murder scene of a mother and her children. When Will investigates, he’s not sure if he’s seeing ghosts or if the tragic events are somehow related to his past. The only clues come from his mysterious neighbor, Ann (Oscar®-nominee Naomi Watts), who helps him piece together this haunting puzzle… (Amazon)

Real Steel Fun Facts:

“Real Steel” is set in the near future, where robots have replaced boxers in the ring, and is directed by Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum,” “Date Night”).

“Real Steel” stars Hugh Jackman (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” “The Prestige”) as Charlie Kenton, a financially strapped, risk-taking former boxer who now makes his living on an underworld robot boxing circuit, operating the metal pugilists that made his human profession obsolete.

The robots each have a distinctive look, personality and color scheme and range in size from 7’6” to 8’5” in height. Based on human form, they each have two legs, two arms, a torso and a head—with the exception of a two-headed bot aptly named “Twin Cities.”

In addition to their distinctive personas, every robot has a specific sound personality. When a robot lands a punch there’s a sound specific to his skeletal material, his mechanisms, his bulk and his mass and there’s also an aura sound so that just merely by being turned on every robot has a whir or a whoosh or an engine hum or the sound or a computer.

Evangeline Lilly (“Lost”), who plays Bailey, never saw herself making a boxing film, but when she read the heartfelt script she was won over.

Toronto-native Dakota Goyo was chosen from thousands of 10-year-old boys who auditioned for the role of Max, Hugh Jackman’s on-screen son, as part of an international casting search.

Filming the robot boxing scenes was done with both motion-capture technology and practical-built, full-scale robots. The motion-capture elements were performed and shot months earlier on a stage in Los Angeles. Fighters were put in the ring wearing data-capturing jumpsuits and as they fought, their motions were converted into robot avatars in the computer and instantaneously appeared on the monitors on set. Then, during principal photography, the filmmakers lined up their cameras on an empty ring and the motion-capture data streamed through their cameras, allowing them to watch and frame the robot fighting in the ring in real time.

Sugar Ray Leonard was hired by the filmmakers to serve as the film’s boxing consultant and to train Hugh Jackman for his appearance in the ring.

“Real Steel” costume designer Marlene Stewart created a wardrobe for Hugh Jackman’s character Charlie that was inspired by looks from the 1960s, drawing from rugged Americana styles. Even his sunglasses are retro.

In “Real Steel” there is a clear delineation between the two worlds of robot boxing. There is the official league (the WRB); it’s corporate sponsored, with big money, sanctioned venues and strict rules. Then there is the underworld, which has unsanctioned venues, with no rules, no restrictions—the robots fight to the death.

This book could not have come at a better time in my life. We all read many financial books, that are here to guide us into taking care of our spending and finances. Well, I can honestly say I have read one too many books, and as much useful information as they provide me, I still felt lost and confused. Dollars and Uncommon Sense is somewhat different, when I received the book, I immediately thought this would be another book that will tell me things that I most likely will not do. I was wrong… It took me about a week to finish this book, only because I wanted to take action in what was requested of me, right away. Dollars and Uncommon Sense is meant to be read in one sitting, maybe two, depending on your availability.

What makes Dollars and Uncommon Sense the must-have financial book for the year 2012?!

The fact that you can start to see major changes to the way you handle your money, as well as the fact that by the end of the year, if you follow the steps in the book, you will most likely see major financial changes that you didn’t see in your previous years.

The thing that grabbed my interest and kept me motivated to read this book was at how easy the steps are, and although some of them won’t make much sense right away, in the end it will.

// ]]>

This book will teach you the following and much more:

Change the way you think about money by establishing the 6 Key Traits of Wealth Builders

It will teach you the 3 Ps: Principles, Priorities and Plans

It will teach you how to spend your money. I know most of us do not need help in this area, or so we think we don’t. The Spending chapter in the Dollars and Uncommon Sense will make you realize that you probably spend more money than you think. It is a real eye opener.

It will teach you how to change your Priorities. This one was a tough one for me, because it didn’t make sense. Hence the title of the book Dollars and Uncommon Sense, some things in this book, won’t immediately make sense to you, at least not right away. After reading the book, it all makes sense now. According to the book, your priorities should be as follow: Give, Save and Pay.

“Giving away 10 percent of what you make is the easiest and quickest way for you to start having more money.” (Dollars & Uncommon Sense, Steve Repak)

The book prepares you with really simple ways to get out of debt, save money for rainy days, and save money for when you want to “Quit” days. Dollars & Uncommon Sense: Basic Training for your Money is unlike any other financial book you’ll ever read. It will truly change your life and knock some financial “uncommon” sense into you.

Real Steel

At first I did not know what to expect from this film, but after watching, I realized how much into the movie I was in. This movie was awesome, and it makes the perfect family movie. You will, laugh, scream, yell “Go Atom”, from the very edge of your seat. It will get you emotional at times, but I can sincerely say I can watch this movie again and again.

Sometime in the not-too-distant future, boxing has been outlawed and replaced by fighting matches with robots. Big robots. Hulking, rock ‘em, sock ‘em mechanical robots. But if those machines are cutting edge, Real Steel sticks to an old-fashioned style of storytelling, with a tale of a down-and-out fight manager (Hugh Jackman) looking for a good ‘bot to get back in the game, and get back out of debt. (Amazon)

50/50

50/50 was a very interesting movie, probably because it was inspired by a true story. I enjoy Seth Rogen comedies and even though 50/50 had its funny moments, I felt weird laughing at the jokes, due to the sensitive nature of the disease. The actors all did an amazing job, which made the film more enjoyable and somewhat less weird.

Diagnosed with spinal cancer, 27-year-old Adam (Gordon-Levitt) navigates the road to recovery with the sometimes overbearing support of his crude best friend (Rogen), his smothering mother (Anjelica Huston) and an inexperienced therapist (Anna Kendrick). Inspired by a true story, 50/50 is an honest, yet hysterically funny, account of a young man’s journey toward healing.

Paranormal Activity 3

This is one of those movies that will take some guts for me to watch it, I guess that makes it a really good scary movie.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 takes audiences back to where it all began with the masterminds behind the first two films returning to craft a hauntingly chilling follow up. Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the filmmakers who created the unsettling sensation Catfish, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 achieved the biggest theatrical debut for a horror film ever, ultimately earning more than $200 million worldwide.
I first saw them on this Canadian couple that happened to be vacationing in the Dominican Republic at the same time as I; they wore their Vibrams to a waterfall tour we did together. The tour required water shoes and theirs looked very distinct and comfortable.

After, arriving at the states I promised myself that I would get a pair. Well, I didn’t quite get the pair right away, I procrastinated, but it was always on my to do list. As I procrastinated I also researched the shoe even more, I found out that they weren’t just for water, they are for pretty much anything that deals with feet. Apparently they are the perfect shoe for running. Oddly as they might look, they provide all the support and comfort your feet needs in order for you to have a great run. They are also great for working out, yoga, cross training, water activities, hiking and of course everyday walking.

Imagine footwear that can actually help make the foot healthier, that can strengthen muscles in the feet and lower legs, improve range of motion and increase sensory reception important to balance and agility. Imagine footwear that might just make running safer and healthier, by encouraging a forefoot strike and a more natural running form that creates less impact on the knees, hips and lower back. That is what Vibram FiveFingers can offer. (Vibram FiveFingers)

I use my Vibram FiveFingers for every workout I do. The first time I used them was for my usual Nike Training Club workouts I do at home, which involves, some warm up cardio, as well as calisthenics, plyometrics, yoga and some weight exercises. The first time, the shoes felt a bit odd, but comfortable. After a few exercises at home, I decided to step it up a notch and see how the Vibram will feel at one of my favorite gym classes: Urban Rebounding. Urban Rebounding involves cardio exercises on a small trampoline, where you jog in place, bounce, kick, do squats and sprinting. I love this class, and as comfortable as the Vibram FiverFingers felt at home with I wanted them to feel the same during the class. They did! They provided the most amazing, light weight exercise. The hardest thing to describe is how fantastic these shoes are when exercising, they are extremely comfortable. Usually with sneakers, you feel them “there”, on your feet, sometimes the laces are too tight, or loose or your toes are not comfortable, nor your ankles, so you start to feel discomfort. I can proudly say, I do not feel any of that with my Vibram FiveFingers. Truly amazing.

One last thing, I want to point out that everyone in the gym class kept asking me, that I figure it’s on a lot of people’s mind when they see these shoes:

Do the shoes stink? Meaning, does wearing them after a while, while barefoot, make the shoe smell funky, like sweaty sneakers?!.
ABSOLUTELY NOT! I’ve worn them for quite a few workouts now and they smell fresh, they don’t smell at all. Not sure how they do it, but I’m very happy!

Anyways, I do intend on purchasing another pair of Vibram FiveFingers because I love them that much, and I do want to get the ones for running and test those out. I highly recommend them, aside from being the center of attention at places like the gym, where not everyone has them, yet. They are the most comfortable shoes you’ll ever wear.

When two of the world’s most elite operatives — Danny, a retired contract killer (Statham), and Hunter, his longtime mentor (De Niro) — go up against the cunning leader of a secret military society (Owen), their hunt takes them around the globe from Australia to Paris, London, and the Middle East. As the stakes rise along with the body count, Danny and Hunter are soon plunged into an action-packed game of cat-and-mouse where no one is what they seem. Based on a shocking true story, it’s an explosive, no-mercy thrill ride where the predator ultimately becomes the prey. (Amazon)

I was recently asked to share my thoughts about the 2nd edition of The Twitter Book by Tim O’Reilly and Sarah Milstein. My first thought was I think I know all there is to know about Twitter, I mean what more is there and what tools are out there that I haven’t tried out yet. Hmm… was I in denial. After reading The Twitter Book, 2nd Edition I’ve realized how much stuff I didn’t know about Twitter and the tools out there that make the Twitter experience much more meaningful.
I won’t share too much from the book because I want you all, that believe you know all there is to know about Twitter to read it. I will mention some things that I didn’t know:

There’s a site that helps you keep track of tweeted links that link to your website. (The Twitter Book, pg. 81)

I like Trending topics and if you are like me, I always wondered how a trend got started, what they mean or for how long they’ve been trending. Apparently there’s a couple of sites that tells me what I need. (The Twitter Book, pg. 83)

To be influential on social media is very important. Up until I read this book I thought Klout was the only site that measured influence. Apparently there about four more sites that measure influence. (The Twitter Book, pg. 99)

Ever wonder how often you tweet in a day? The site listed on pg. 129 will show you your daily average.

The Twitter Book, 2nd edition also talks about auto DMs and why you shouldn’t use them. They actually have a pretty good explanation why you shouldn’t auto DM. (The Twitter Book, pg. 137)

Last but not least, The Twitter Book, 2nd edition has a great chapter focusing on Twitter for Business. Which is great for anyone that owns a business and is trying to bring Twitter into their business world. (The Twitter Book, pg. 199)

Every year we complain that we do not have enough money to do anything, yet we find ways to somehow, somewhere find funds to pay for really expensive handbags, really expensive shoes, or really expensive gadgets that we don’t really need nor can “afford”. Personally, I have realized that there are a lot of things that I want and in order to achieve them I have to make some spending habit changes. This year I am planning to do the following and I hope you plan to do the same.

I. Pay off your debt -

The first debt I want out of my sight is my student loans. Sallie Mae has been digging my pockets for far too long and lately I’ve realized that I should’ve done this a long time ago. I’m making it my business to pay off my student loans this year. In 6 months or maybe a year but it shall be done.

// ]]>

II. Double your payments -

You know those paychecks where you have excess money because you’ve already paid the rent, you’ve paid your bills, but you still have a nice chunk of change that makes you feel as if you are “rich” so you decide to go on a shopping spree because you got “money”! Hmm… Not really. While it may seem like you have money, you really don’t, because technically you are drowning in debt, you just don’t realize it. A long time ago I read this amazing book The Automatic Millionaire and the first story in the book talked about a couple that had no debt because they paid everything off. How they managed to do this was by doubling their payments. Doubling your payments can help you get rid of that debt so much quicker. Once that debt is gone, then you can proudly go on your shopping spree and say I’m Rich B$&*%!!

III. Save -

Saving it’s so important. Save to an account that you have no or little access to, that way you don’t spend it. Save $25-$50 every week or every two weeks and by the end of the year utilize that money to buy something you want or to decrease some of your current debt.
I know paying bills is a annoying and paying off debt seems like a never ending cycle. Trust me if you do the tips above you will see light at the end of that “never ending tunnel”. Hang in there and stay focused.
