Netflix Changes Membership Plan

You all know how much I love Netflix and how I’m always advocating for their service as a DVD rental option, even when we have to wait 28 days for a DVD release that comes out 28 days before. A few minutes ago, Netflix decided to notify its customers, including me of future changes to my Netflix membership plan. In the email letter below there’s nothing that states how this membership can or will somehow benefit the member (me). All I see is that my plan is pretty much being split into two and I’ll be paying more. What I also don’t understand is how are they turning the streaming video into a $7.99 membership when most of the movies/videos are really old. You rarely find any NEW releases on streaming, I personally don’t think the streaming is worth $7.99.

Anyways, here’s Netflix letter what do you guys think? Would you stay with the plan or ditch them? Share your thoughts.

We are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into two separate plans to better reflect the costs of each. Now our members have a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan, or both.

127 Hours – I truly enjoyed this movie. A bit gruesome at times, but I found it amazing. Burlesque - I love Christina and Cher, and when I saw this preview I really wanted to see this movie. This movie is definitively in my Netfix queue. “There is, according to Burlesque, a nightclub on the Sunset Strip that looks like a blend of Cabaret and Moulin Rouge and employs a full contingent of dancers and musicians in the service of a neo-retro-burlesque-blues program. Presiding over the craziness within is Tess, a grande dame who also performs occasionally and who could only, under these circumstances, be played by Cher. Entering the scene is a young leather-lunged hopeful from Iowa named Ali, played by Christina Aguilera in her movie-acting debut…” (Amazon)

Faster – “In Faster revenge is a dish best served quickly and with no remorse. Dwayne Johnson’s character Driver has few lines, instead letting his actions–and the growls of the muscle car he’s driving–speak volumes. Bambi – I LOVE Bambi, since I was a little girl, I had the Bambi VHS and the book, and Bambi has always been my favorite childhood movie! Well Bambi is coming out on Blu-Ray DVD this Tuesday, and I am so getting it. There’s nothing like a good ol Disney classic! Digitally remastered! “It always comes up when people are comparing their most traumatic movie experiences: “the death of Bambi’s mother,” a recollection that can bring a shudder to even the most jaded filmgoer. DVD Tuesday – 1/18/11

What’s on DVD this Tuesday?!
But first some quick news…

Starting today, DVD Tuesday will no longer be “What To Netflix this Tuesday”*, due to the fact that Netflix no longer allows their subscriber to rent certain movies on the day they are release. Instead, Netflix has a contract with several movie companies where they make us wait 28 days before allowing us, (the subscriber) to rent those titles that came out 28 days ago. Anyways, I won’t bore you with the details I’m sure you’ve all heard about it, if not click the link above. For those of you that love movies and look forward to when they are release so you can get them from Blockbuster or buy them from Best Buy, I’ll still keep you posted on DVD Tuesday.

One more thing, I’m thinking on having DVD Tuesday text messages for those who wish to subscribe to it. It’ll be one simple text message sent every Tuesday letting you know the titles of DVDs releasing that day. No descriptions, just titles. This is good if you’re on the go, forgot to check my blog, and want to see what movies came out that day, you can pick one up before you go home. Anyways, let me know what you think. The option to subscribe to this FREE service will be sent next month.

Freakonomics The Movie – I read the book but haven’t watched the movie yet. If you like The Tipping Point, Outliers or any of Malcolm Gladwell’s books you’ll enjoy Freakonomics. This is that kinda book that makes you think, say ahh a few times and read again. I’m sure the movie is just as great, so if you don’t like to read, get that DVD. (Buy it from Amazon)

Buried – I’ve heard this movie is good and someone on twitter compared it to 127 hours. I watched 127 hours and that movie was good. Here’s a little product review: Paul Conroy is not ready to die. But when he wakes up six feet underground with no idea of who put him there or why, life for the truck driver and family man instantly becomes a hellish struggle for survival. Buried with only a cell phone and a lighter, his contact with the outside world and ability to piece together clues that could help him discover his location are maddeningly limited. Takers – Did not see or hear anything about Takers, but I kinda want to see it. It looks like it has a lot of action, based on the previews. Did you anyone see it?! Let’s see what the product review says: This high-stakes action thriller stars Matt Dillon, Paul Walker, Idris Elba, Jay Hernandez, Michael Ealy and Tip “T.I.” Harris. After pulling off a spectacular series of brilliantly planned bank robberies, a notorious team of professional criminals attempts one last heist, a once-in-a-lifetime job with a $25 million payoff. What’s on DVD Tuesday 1/11/11?

The Social Network – I love, love, love this movie. The Social Network message was beyond Facebook, it’s about being successful and humble, and dealing with everyone that will try to shut you down. This movie is truly amazing from beginning to the very end. Simply brilliant! Please rent it, buy it, watch it and let me know what you think.

Piranha 3D – I did not see this movie yet, but I will rent it. Here’s a little scoop on what the movie is about… Debating the merits of Piranha 3D, director Alexandre (Mirrors) Aja’s testosterone-driven valentine to Joe Dante’s 1978 original and the excesses of ’80s genre films in general, is a fool’s errand; it is, after all, a movie about prehistoric fish preying on hormonal partygoers in various states of undress–and in 3D (Amazon)

Alpha & Omega – Another animated movie that didn’t get much buzz in the theaters. I’ll probably rent this it looks interesting… Come along on the ultimate road-trip adventure that will leave the whole family howling with laughter! When Kate, a take-charge “Alpha” wolf, and Humphrey, a laid-back “Omega” wolf, get snatched by park rangers and relocated halfway across the country, the two must set off on an incredible journey home! Despicable Me (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

Despicable Me was the most entertaining animated 3D movie I’ve seen in the theaters. An evil lab doctor, his minions and two lovely orphan kids, make this movie absolutely wonderful from start to finish. Despicable Me makes a great holiday movie and gift this season.
I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars so go rent it or buy it.

The A-Team (+ Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]

I have yet to see the A-Team, but I do have a guest post preview on the movie. As an 80s child, I grew up watching the A-Team when I was little, and I enjoyed it. I don’t know if I’d feel the same way about the movie. I’m also shocked that Tyrese wasn’t in the movie as Mr. T like it was previously mentioned, maybe it was just a rumor. Anyways, if you’ve seen The A-Team, please let me know how it was in the comments section.

The Other Guys (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

I loved this movie! When Will Ferrell is in the picture you know it’ll be funny, and that’s exactly what this movie is, super funny, and entertaining, paired with Mark Wahlberg, this movie almost made me cry from laughing so hard. Definitively, rent it or buy it. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Nanny McPhee Returns [Blu-ray]

I’m surprised this came out on DVD so quickly, I actually wanted to see it at the theaters. I like nanny movies, such as Mary Poppins and Nanny McPhee, so I figured this movie should be really good. Unfortunately, I didn’t see it yet, I’ll catch it soon. If you saw it, please share your thoughts in the comment section.

Frugal Holiday Fun for the Family

When the kids are home from school, you have time off from work, and everyone is cooped up in the house because of cold weather, it probably won’t be long before the whole family starts to get a little stir crazy. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you have the extra cash to blow on a family vacation (or even a trip to the movie theater). If you find that, like many families right now, you are short on cash approaching the holidays, you may think that watching the snow fall is just about your only option for entertainment. But there are plenty of activities you can undertake from the comfort of your own home without spending a ton of cash. Here are just a few frugal ways to ensure that your family has some fun this holiday season.

1. Get crafty. Raid the kids’ craft supply drawer for a way to have some fun for little-to-no cost. You can even kill two birds with one stone by creating personalized cards or ornaments to give to friends and family as gifts. This way you’re getting the whole family involved in the giving spirit of the season while getting the quality time you crave and occupying the hands and minds of your loved ones. Alternately, think about having a contest to see who can build a snowman that looks the most like another member of the family!

2. Rent a few flicks. If you’re feeling lazy, you’re not alone. This is a prime time to take a load off, forget the stress that dominates your life during the rest of the year, and make like a hibernating bear. Rent some holiday flicks at your local video store (or opt for Netflix – the first month is free) to save money over hitting the theater. Snuggle up, pop some corn, and enjoy a couple hours of mindless fun.

3. Bake up a storm. Nothing says the holidays have arrived like a tray full of calorie-laden cookies. So pull out everyone’s favorite recipes and spend a day or two baking them as a family. Set up stations and have everyone rotate between prepping ingredients, operating the mixer, spooning up dough (or employing the cookie cutters), watching the oven, and decorating with icing. You’ll not only get everyone hanging out in the same room, you’ll have the added benefit of near-instant gratification in the form of a variety of sugary treats.

4. Host a game night. When was the last time you turned off the electronics and went old school with a few board games? Think about getting a couple of new ones if your collection was last relevant when your kids were toddlers. A few newbies that are fun and easy are Apples to Apples and Pictureka. Everyone should be able to participate and although the kids might gripe at first (that’s their number one job) they are bound to have a great time once you get going.

5. Go traditional. Decorate the tree, sing some carols, or light a fire for some ambiance and warmth and read aloud from A Christmas Carol, The Night Before Christmas, or some other literary favorites. A little nostalgia and some family time are all that you really need to make this holiday season special without spending a lot.
