pel•o•ton
/ˈpe-lə-ˌtän/ n. The main group of riders in a race. Riders in a peloton work together, conserve energy and perform better because of one another.
Earlier this year I gifted myself to a Peloton bike. I missed doing cardio workouts, and after I had my child, I knew I needed a cardio machine at home.
As a runner, I really wanted a treadmill, but living in an apartment building treadmill running wouldn’t be that easy without disturbing the neighbors. Also, felt it would take too much space when not in use.
Spinning wasn’t always my thing, it kinda still isn’t, all I know is that on my studio visits to several different cycling studios, I’ve gotten a pretty good sweat.
Sweat is my adrenaline!
I’ve been to the Peloton studios a couple of times prior to parenthood. Some of my favorite instructors include Jess King, Nicole Meline (no longer there) and Robin Arzon from earlier running years.
Matt Wilpers is also one of my favorite instructors, never had the chance to take a live class with him though, but I remember him from running classes, before he joined Peloton. Matt is a really great endurance and track coach, he knows his stuff, no wonder he’s a perfect fit for power zone training classes at Peloton.
With all this in mind and many go for it comments from my running community family, I didn’t hesitate to make the Peloton Bike purchase.
100+ rides later, I am still riding and not only that, I often take great advantage of the other classes available (yoga, meditation, stretch and strength training).
This is not a cheap investment, but it is an investment. You can easily pay in installments. I opted for a pretty basic Bike plan, I already had the bike shoes, which you can purchase on Amazon, or Ebay for less.
I was also able to get a promotional code to get some of the accessories, such as the mat, weights, and water bottle for free.
So I’ve mentioned some of the instructors that motivated me to make the purchase. Here is my short list of instructors that keep me motivated to ride almost every day. Their energy is contagious, they make sure you really push yourself even when you think there’s nothing left.
Ally MissLove
is one of my top motivators at the moment. Her classes are always rewarding. Every time I take a class of hers I am guaranteed to sweat, laugh and or cry. I often underestimate whether the class will be easy, moderate or hard, most of the time they’re all of the above (challenging).
Some of my favorite Ally classes include: Sundays with Love, Caribbean Music Ride and Tabata rides.
Robin Arzon
the queen of badass and kickass. She’s not only motivational but she’s so bad at it. When Robin says “Don’t touch that resistance,” you kinda listen. She gives you that tough love. She keeps you Strong, inside and out.
Her energy is contagious. After you take a Robin class you feel like you can conquer any day.
Some of my favorite Robin classes include: The LIZZO ride, Tabata Rides, Live DJ Ride.
Last, but not least is
Matt Wilpers and Dennis Morton Power Zone Rides.
They are both great power zone coaches. I enjoy their guidance while you try to maintain your zone/outputs. Matt usually has a great playlist for his rides. Dennis gives great detailed coaching, lots of feedback on posture and breathing.
So there you have it, a well overdue review/thoughts/personal experience on owning a Peloton bike and being a Peloton NYC studio rider.
Bottom line, yes, it is a pricey bike, but I looked at it this way:
- I pay as I go.
- I’ll still own the bike once I’m done paying for it.
- It doesn’t take much space in my room.
- It is pretty quiet, doesnt wake anyone up, and doesn’t disturb the neighbors.
- I can ride from the comfort of my home and whatever time I like.
- Tons of LIVE and on demand classes available.
- Tons of beginner ride classes for when I wasn’t too sure I could keep up.
- The list goes on…
