Before becoming a household name, Nicky Jam was born Nick Rivera Caminero to a Puerto Rican father and Dominican mother in Boston but raised in Puerto Rico from the age of 10.

He recorded his first album at the age of 11, titled Distinto a Los Demás after being discovered at a supermarket and signed to a music label in Puerto Rico. You can see the influence the island had on his rhythm and flow in his bio-series.

In the late 90s, Nicky Jam formed the music duo, Los Cangris, with another reggaeton giant, Daddy Yankee (before reaching his own fame from his 2004 hit, “Gasolina”). Before their names were in international lights, the group disbanded for reasons you’ll discover in the 13-chapter series.

Revival through Reggaeton

In 2007 Nicky moved to Medellin, Colombia, after falling for the country’s love of lyrics and cadence, Nicky positioned himself as a top songwriter. By 2010, Nicky was topping the charts, opening shows for reggaeton stars, J Balvin and Reykon.

In 2015, he released “El Perdon” with Enrique Iglesias, which pushed him to the forefront of reggaeton music. The song earned him his first Latin Grammy and was heard worldwide on the 2018 FIFA World Cup stage in Russia.

From his humble and troubled start in Boston, to his downfall on the streets, to becoming the king of one of the most popular musical genres, this is not only the life of Nicky Jam, but the history of reggaeton itself. The reborn star has since received some of the most prestigious awards in the industry, sold out stadiums, earned the admiration of his colleagues and emerged as a leading exponent of urban music.
