Pedro Fernández, Kany García, Lali, Nia and Rozalén to perform at 9th Annual PLATINO Awards

Everything is ready for the 9th Annual PLATINO Awards for Ibero-American Cinema to celebrate the best Ibero-American audiovisual works with music and performances featuring the region’s different cultures. The stellar music cast for the gala includes Mexican artist Pedro Fernández, Puerto Rican songwriter Kany García, Nia, Rozalén and Argentinian artist Lali ––who will be hosting the event alongside Miguel Ángel Muñoz––.

Set against the Madrid starry night, the PLATINO gala will present the PLATINO Honorary Award to Carmen Maura. Competing for Best Ibero-American Fiction Film are Mexico’s Noche de fuego, by Tatiana Huezo, andSpanish productions Madres paralelasEl buen patrón and Maixabel. In the Best Ibero-American Fiction Miniseries/TV Series or Documentary Feature Film category, the nominees are Mexico’s Luis Miguel: La serie and Narcos: México; Argentina’s El reino and Chile’s Isabel. “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for it,” a documentary honoring the life and career of the renown Puerto Rican actress, also aspires to one statuette.

OUTSTANDING IBERO-AMERICAN MUSIC PERFORMERS AT THE PLATINO AWARDS

PEDRO FERNÁNDEZ: Born in Guadalajara (Jalisco, Mexico), Pedro Fernández is an icon in Mexican music and has won four Grammy Latino and three TvyNovelas awards. He has released 39 albums, for which he has received 3 Disco de Diamante awards, 37 Disco de Oro awards and 26 Disco de Platino awards. In addition to his career as a singer and composer, Fernández has starred in 25 movies opposite some of the biggest names in Mexico’s golden movie age, including Adalberto Martínez “Resortes,” Maricruz Olivier, Mario Almada or Joaquín Cordero. He has also starred in Telemundo’s El santo patrón ––an upcoming Netflix series scheduled for international release––, and in HBO’s Max Mariachis, a productionset for release in 2022 in which he plays a former Mariachi with Alzheimer’s.

KANY GARCÍA: Since the beginning of her career, the Puerto Rican songwriter has won six Grammy Latino awards, received additional nominations for this accolade and composed songs for Jennifer López and Chayanne. In 2016, her album Limonada became number one on the Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart. Her fifth album, Soy yo, received four Grammy Latino nominations and was among Billboard’s Top 50 albums of the year. Contra el viento, her sixth album, received the Grammy Latino award for Best Singer-songwriter Album and was on the Billboard’s Top 50 albums of the year chart. In 2020, she released, Mesa para dos, featuring collaborations with Camilo, Carlos Vives and Mon Laferte. The almbum went on to win two Grammy Latino awards for Best Singer-songwriter Album. Kany’s latest allbum, El amor que merecemos, is scheduled for release on May 27. The artist will be touring Spain in 2022.

ROZALÉN: Rozalén’s artistic career is intertwined with social activism. In all her on-stage performances, she features sign language interpreter Beatriz Romero. Since her 2013 debut, she has won four Discos de Oro, two Discos de Platino, one Goya and has received three Grammy Latino nominations. Her breakthrough album, Cuando el río suena…, catapulted her international career and took her on a tour across Spain, Latin America and Europe. In 2020, she launched her fourth album, El árbol y el bosque, which became Spain’s best-selling album. In 2021, she received the Premio Nacional de Músicas Actuales award and the Goya Award for Best Original Song with Que no, que no.

NIA: Before winning reality show Operación Triunfo in 2020, the native of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was a member of the island’s Philharmonic’s Official Chorus and a cast member of musical El Rey León for three years. Her debut album, Cuídate,was released in July 2021; In 2022 so far, she has released several singles: Tulum, featuring Gente de Zona, and JC el Diamante. Following her successful OT run, Nia also won Tu cara me suena 2021As an actress, she appears in Érase una vez… pero ya no, a Netflix series by Manolo Caro, starring opposite Sebastián Yatra and Asier Etxaendía.

LALI: Lali’s acting career began in 2003 with roles in various soap operas. But it was her performance in Casi Ángeles that got her noticed. Around this time, she launched her music career, joined forces with fellow actors to create music band Teen Angels and became the band’s singer. She starred in soap opera Cuando me sonríes and has participated in other TV projects like El HostSandro de AméricaChiquititas sin fin or Solamente vos. More recently, she played Wendy in Netflix’s Sky Rojo, a successful Spanish-language series directed by Álex Pina currently on its third season. Lali’s in the big-screen movies include Acusada (nominated for an the Golden Lion at Venice’s Film Festival), PermitidosMe casé con un boludoA los 40 and La pelea de mi vidaThe Argentinian artist returns to the PLATINO awards gala following her successful performance at the 6th PLATINO event, which was hosted in the Riviera Maya years ago. Back then, her performance featured some of her most popular songs, such as Cien gradosSin querer queriendo or Caliente.

A WORLD CLASS IBERO-AMERICAN CELEBRATION IN MADRID

The 9th Annual PLATINO Awards for Ibero-American Cinema will be formally presented at the IFEMA Palacio Municipal in Madrid on May 1. The entire region of Madrid is an enviable and incomparable movie destination for both professionals scouting filming locations and tourists interested in movie-inspired trips. The gala will be broadcast by TV networks across Ibero-America. Guests will later be invited to attend the Xcaret after-party, which brings together the entire Ibero-American star-system.
